According to DVSA, you must follow these steps to become (ADI) an approved driving instructor.

Check if you can become an instructor

1. You should be aged 21 years or over.
2. Have held full UK driving licence for 3+ years.
3. Have no more than 6 penalty points on your driving licence.

Apply to become a Driving Instructor

1. Get your DBS checked.
2. You must apply for the relevant one even if you already have been checked for another career and it has to be renewed every 4 years.

Expectations

What to expect from Instructor Training

Theory Test
(ADI Part 1)

Theory test is the first step of your driving instructor training course. It's a computer-based test and lasts for 90 minutes. The test consists of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section. Both parts of the exam must be passed. Visit DVSA pages for more information.

Driving Ability Test
(ADI Part 2)

Driving ability test is the second step of your driving instructor training course. The ADI part 2 test is different from the learners' driving test as you are only allowed up to 6 minor driving faults during the test. This test aims to check the competency level of your professional like driving.

Instructional Ability Test (ADI Part 3)

Instructional ability is the 3rd and final step of your driving instructor training course. This test aims to show your instructional ability. Your examiner will assess you on 17 competencies designed by DVSA while you teach one of your pupils during the 45 minutes of your test.

How iZi Driving Academy Trains You to Become an Approved Driving Instructor

Registration and Documentation
When you contact us, our trained staff will signpost you to the right track of becoming an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) Once you have applied for your documentation we will ask you to provide us with your driving license, your PRN number, and your DBS certificate.
Knowledge Test (Part 1)
Your next stage is to book the theory test which is commonly known as part one. We will assist you with the relevant resources to complete this stage successfully.
Driving Test (Part 2 Training)
Once you have completed part one, our experienced trainer will thoroughly assess your driving and will give you ten hours of training to bring your driving to the professional level as expected by DVSA standards We will provide you with all the skills and knowledge you need to pass this test. You will have three attempts to pass this test.
Our Part 3 Training just designed for you
You will get a personal training plan before you start your training so you can fit your sessions in around your job and family commitments. We train you at your ease. All in-car training is delivered on a one-to-one basis with a qualified instructor trainer and will be tailored to your needs.
Get Licenced
You will apply for your PDI licence and start working with iZi Driving Academy while learning and continuing with your training to pass the (Part 3) test successfully.
