Motorway Training

There are different types of roads in the UK used for commuting which mainly include:

  • Motorways (M Roads)
  • Dual carriageways and Single carriageways (A Roads)
  • Countryside (B Roads)

Each of them has its type of layouts, signs and traffic conditions. Driving on Motorways is very different to driving on other types of roads with more challenging rules and layouts.

Since June 2018 In England, Scotland and Wales learner drivers have been able to take lessons under the supervision of an Approved Driving Instructor on the motorways in a car with dual controls. These lessons are not compulsory as motorway driving is not part of a practical driving test but give learners a better understanding of how to drive safely at high speed.

Other than information signs, other types of signs are used on motorways to warn the drivers of the conditions i.e. fog, spillages, brake down, road works or queues, etc.

It is important to observe and follow the signs displayed on the gantry or on the side of the road.

The Highway Code is very clear on this it says you should always drive in the left lane when the road ahead is clear. Keep left unless overtaking.

8. Understand the Different Colours of Studs

Road markings and studs contribute to road safety by assisting motorway users to identify safety, risks and separating potential traffic conditions.

They assist drivers in dark or poor visibility conditions.
